Hey Tod! Thanks for doing this, I finally could check out the project. I will try to explain some situations/pitfalls here: - when changing the volume of "VCF Rhythm", the reverb level should change accordingly. Otherwise, the signal would be more wet, than before. - when putting a distortion plugin on BUS-1, the reverb send level should get louder, as well. Otherwise, this will destroy the wet/dry ratio again. I know, it's tricky!
The reverb is indeed in the "root" of the project, because other instruments need to access it, too. Haha, I wish I could route it the way I want! I fear, it's technically not possible, because Reaper handles routing differently. But I'd loved to be proven wrong :p
Reaper allows absolutely any routing you could dream up. Certainly it's the most unrestricted DAW for routing at any rate. If it can't be done in Reaper... it's probably not ever possible. Sorry, that sounds very fanboy! Not sure how else to repeat "unrestricted". If this is a studio project, just dial up whatever tracks and routing you need to get the job done. Don't be concerned with how the mixing board looks. If this is for a live setup that needs to be run from various MIDI controllers easily and presents a challenge... The thing to do is make a section of tracks and routing (maybe on the right end of the board) that interfaces with the controllers. For example: You can't assign a send (beyond the generic slot number anyway) to a controller. Solution: Route the send through a new track. Assign that track volume to the controller.
I think, I might need to do a video to explain exactly what I need. You will see, that Reaper definitely lacks in this department. And AFAIK, there's no way to really solve that. This will be a shaky iPhone video, so be prepared :p But as I mentioned, I would LOVE to be proven wrong!
I understand precisely what you want and the one thing that Reaper "can't" do is automagically compensate for changes in level introduced by plugins you drop on the buss. There are plugins that can kind of do that, and Reaper will host those just fine. In fact some of them are written in JS which would not be possible anywhere else. If it was me, I'd set the saturation so that the dry bus sounded the way I wanted it, then set the we/dry level by adjusting the sends. With my method that means adjusting the one send on the bus track, whereas with VCA you'd have to adjust each individual track send. Either way though, once you've done that, it's going to work fine. Frankly, you're doing it backwards - trying to set the wet/dry mix before you even know how loud the dry is even going to be. It's part of the job, dude. You had something set up to work just fine but then you made a drastic change and YES you will have to compensate. But again, unless you also apply the saturation to the sends (also a lot easier using my method) the "wet" will be more dynamic than the "dry", which probably isn't actually a problem in practice unless you're really smashing the fuck out of the "dry", but it is a thing. Even if you do saturate the sends, the dynamics won't likely be the same unless the mix is the same, in which case the whole thing is moot because you could just send from the bus after the saturation and be done with it. If you really want help finding an A/B level matching plug, I'll see what I can find, but you could just search the forum for those words...
Guys, while preparing the video, I just prove myself wrong. This is actually pretty embarrassing :D I put an Insert FX on a Bus in Cubase and changed the make up volume of the compressor. The dry/wet ratio is destroyed here as well. I really wonder, why I never noticed this. But to sum it up, yes Reaper is unrestricted, I stand correct! And ashcat, you are right, I will just get used to manually adjust the send level, when putting an EQ, compressor or distortion plugin on a bus. Thanks a lot for your patience guys! EDIT: Ashcat, if there is really a JS plugin, I will check it out, thanks for mentioning!
Awesome, looking forward to that! I just checked out the plugin, this is fabulous, exactly what I needed. Sorry for me apparently missunderstanding all that, but this is such a complex topic.
Just an aside I think renaming should still contain the actual channel numbers aka "Reverb 1 (5/6)" in some form.
