What are the read/write permissions set to for the drive? Right-click on drive and select Sharing and Security, then go to the Security tab and check the permissions for each type of user/account.

I am having the same issue. I've looked everywhere and can't figure it out. I just got a WD 500GB eSATA drive and the file system is FAT32. If I try to open a new file, I get its "formatted as a FAT volume", so I can't change the A or V to R. Am using this on a Vista system. I can pull up old projects, just can't open any new ones.....

Actually your problem is different Airborne. FAT 32 is not supported in Vista Pro Tools. Your drive needs to be formatted NTFS. Backup your files and reformat the drive NTFS Basic.
